Miami-Dade County is authorized to appropriate and pay $3 million to Monica Cantillo Acosta and $3 million to Luis Alberto Cantillo Acosta as compensation for the wrongful death of their mother, Nhora Acosta.

Nhora Acosta died on November 13, 2004, after suffering a severe head injury when a Miami-Dade County bus driver suddenly braked, causing her to fall and strike her head inside the bus.

A Miami-Dade County jury found the bus driver 100 percent negligent in November 2007 and determined damages of $3 million for each child.

Attorney's fees, lobbying fees, costs, and similar expenses related to this claim are limited to 25 percent of the total amount awarded.

The awarded amounts are intended to provide sole compensation for all present and future claims arising from Nhora Acosta's death.
