Increases the vote threshold required to retain justices and judges through merit selection and retention from a simple majority to at least 60 percent of qualified electors voting within the court's territorial jurisdiction.

A justice or judge is removed from office if more than 40 percent of qualified electors vote against retention, compared to the current rule requiring a majority vote for non-retention.

Creates Section 32 of Article XII to establish the effective date and applicability of the amendment.

Amendment applies beginning with retention elections during the 2012 General Election and takes effect immediately upon voter approval.

Does not apply to circuit court judges or county court judges chosen by election rather than merit selection and retention.
