CS/HB 241 - Emergency Medical Services Summary

• Deletes the requirement for emergency medical technicians, paramedics, and 911 public safety telecommunicators to complete an educational course on HIV/AIDS transmission, infection control, and prevention as a condition of biennial license renewal.

• Redefines "basic life support" to include techniques aligned with the National EMS Education Standards of the United States Department of Transportation, in addition to the Emergency Medical Technician Basic Training Course Curriculum.

• Changes the comprehensive state plan for emergency medical services review period from biennial (every 2 years) to every 5 years.

• Reduces the timeframe for emergency medical technician and paramedic certification examination from 2 years to 1 year after course completion.

• Modifies out-of-state trained emergency medical technician or paramedic certification requirements to accept completion of National EMS Education Standards curricula in addition to United States Department of Transportation training.

• Effective date: July 1, 2012.
