HB 331 Summary

• Requires financial literacy to be included in the Next Generation Sunshine State Standards within the economics curriculum for social studies courses.

• Mandates financial literacy instruction as part of required instruction in public schools and specifies it must be included in the one-half credit economics requirement for high school graduation.

• Replaces the term "vocational-preparatory instruction" with "applied academics for adult education instruction" throughout Florida education statutes related to adult general education programs.

• Requires students entering adult general education programs after July 1, 2012, to complete "Action Steps to Employment" activities by the end of their first term, including identifying employment opportunities, creating employment goals, and conducting skill inventories.

• Authorizes district school boards and Florida College System institution boards to vary up to 10 percent of intended learning outcomes for career education programs, except for programs requiring state or federal licensure.

• Removes the exemption from tuition and fees for adult general education students and deletes lifelong learning and recreational courses from adult education program priorities.
