Animal control officers, wildlife officers, and disease laboratories must report knowledge of animal bites, animal diseases, or suspected disease clustering in animals that may indicate a threat to humans to the Department of Health.

The Board of Pharmacy may authorize county and municipal animal control agencies and registered humane societies to purchase and use sodium pentobarbital and other specified prescription drugs for euthanizing or chemically immobilizing animals, with application and renewal fees not to exceed $50 each.

The Board of Pharmacy may, upon recommendation from the Board of Veterinary Medicine, add additional controlled substances and legend drugs to the authorized list for animal euthanasia and chemical immobilization.

The Board of Pharmacy or Department of Health may revoke or suspend permits if permittees or their employees use authorized drugs for unauthorized purposes, fail to prevent misuse or theft, or violate related pharmacy regulations.

Intracardial injection for euthanizing dogs and cats is restricted to only unconscious animals with no corneal reflex, and lethal solutions or powders cannot be delivered by adding them to food.
