School Board of Miami-Dade County authorized to pay $1,175,000 to Anais Cruz Peinado as compensation for the death of her son, Juan Carlos Rivera, who was killed by another student on school grounds on September 15, 2009.

Settlement amount of $1,875,000 total was agreed upon and approved by the school board on October 17, 2011, with $700,000 already paid and $1,175,000 remaining under this act.

Attorney's fees, lobbying fees, and similar expenses are capped at 15 percent of the first $1,000,000 awarded and 10 percent of the remainder, totaling a maximum of $167,000.

Taxable costs related to the civil action may be collected separately in addition to the $167,000 fee limitation, excluding attorney's fees and lobbying fees.

Act takes effect upon becoming law.
