Each district school board may provide disability history and awareness instruction during the first 2 weeks of October each year, designated as "Disability History and Awareness Weeks," beginning with the 2014-2015 school year.

The Department of Education shall assist in creating curriculum for disability history and awareness instruction to be used in each school district, with content covering disability history, civil rights, and contributions of individuals with disabilities.

Schools may integrate instruction into existing curriculum through supplementing lesson plans, holding assemblies, or providing school-related activities, and may be augmented by presentations from individuals with disabilities who meet background screening requirements.

A Disability History and Awareness Advisory Council of 15 members shall be created within the Department of Education, consisting of the Commissioner of Education, one House member, one Senate member, and 12 individuals who apply to serve (6 under age 30 and 6 age 30 or older).

The council shall provide curriculum input to the Department of Education, assist schools in locating disability presenters, and submit annual reports by August 1 each year regarding disability awareness recommendations and policy alternatives.
