Utilities cannot terminate gas or electric service for senior citizens or low-income families if the service is their only heating or cooling source during days when the National Weather Service forecasts temperatures of 40°F or below or 90°F or above, plus the following 2 calendar days.

Utilities cannot terminate service for senior citizens or low-income families on any day immediately preceding a holiday or weekend when extreme temperatures (40°F or below or 90°F or above) are forecasted in the utility's service area.

Protections apply only when gas or electric service is the sole source of heating or cooling for the residence.

The act takes effect upon becoming law.
