HB 1333 - Traffic Control Signals Summary

• Requires traffic control signals to display yellow lights with minimum duration of 3 seconds for streets with posted speed limits of 25 mph or less, based on posted speed limit plus 20 percent and Institute of Transportation Engineers standards, with duration raised to nearest half second not to exceed 6 seconds

• Mandates intersections with posted speed limits greater than 55 mph to have advance warning signs alerting drivers to the traffic control signal

• Makes citations for red light violations unenforceable and requires dismissal if the traffic signal device does not meet all requirements of the act

• Requires intersections with traffic infraction detectors to comply by December 31, 2014, and all other intersections to comply by December 31, 2016, with one-third of total intersections examined and brought into compliance each year

• Takes effect July 1, 2014
