HCR 8001 Summary

• Ratifies the proposed Equal Rights Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which was approved by Congress on March 22, 1972 and sent to states for ratification

• Amendment text prohibits denial or abridging of equality of rights under the law by the United States or any state on account of sex

• Grants Congress power to enforce the amendment provisions through appropriate legislation

• Amendment takes effect two years after the date of ratification
