City of North Miami authorized to pay $1,611,237.33 to Maricelly Lopez, individually and as personal representative of the Estate of Omar Mieles, for wrongful death of her son Omar Mieles caused by negligence of a North Miami police officer.

Payment represents the remaining balance of a $1,719,808.63 final judgment entered April 21, 2010, with $108,571.30 already paid by the city.

Jury verdict from March 19, 2010 awarded $3,542,000 in damages, with 50 percent responsibility apportioned to the City of North Miami and 50 percent to the driver of the vehicle in which Omar Mieles was a passenger.

Attorney fees, lobbying fees, costs, and similar expenses related to this claim are capped at 25 percent of the awarded amount.

This payment, combined with the previous $108,571.30 paid under Florida Statutes section 768.28, constitutes sole compensation for all present and future claims arising from Omar Mieles's death on November 11, 2007.
