Surviving spouses of state-employed law enforcement officers or firefighters killed in the line of duty are eligible for monthly death benefit payments equal to the member's salary at time of death, payable for the spouse's lifetime

If no surviving spouse exists or the spouse dies, benefits transfer to unmarried children under 18, continuing until the youngest child turns 18 or reaches age 25 if enrolled as a full-time student

If no surviving spouse or children exist, surviving parents may receive the monthly benefit for up to 5 years

General Revenue Fund will annually appropriate funds to the Florida Retirement System Trust Fund to cover costs exceeding other authorized benefits
