City of North Miami authorized to appropriate $200,000 to Maricelly Lopez individually and as personal representative of the Estate of Omar Mieles for wrongful death of her son caused by police officer negligence

Settlement resolves claim arising from November 11, 2007 collision where Officer James Ray Thompson negligently drove a police vehicle at high speed, causing 18-year-old Omar Mieles to be thrown from a vehicle and fatally injured

Jury verdict in March 2010 awarded $3,542,000 in damages with 50 percent liability apportioned to City of North Miami; final judgment entered April 21, 2010 for $1,719,808.63, of which city paid $108,571.30

Attorney fees, lobbying fees, costs, and similar expenses relating to claim may not exceed 25 percent of the $200,000 award

Combined payments by city under Florida statute section 768.28 and this act constitute sole compensation for all present and future claims arising from Omar Mieles' death
