Prohibits health insurers from imposing prior authorization requirements on abuse-deterrent opioid analgesic drugs unless the same requirements apply to non-abuse-deterrent opioids covered by the policy

Bans "step therapy" requirements that would force patients to try non-abuse-deterrent opioids before receiving coverage for abuse-deterrent formulations

Defines "abuse-deterrent opioid analgesic drug product" as any brand or generic opioid approved by the FDA with labeling indicating it is expected to deter abuse

Applies to all opioid analgesics in immediate-release, extended-release, or long-acting forms, including combination drug products

Effective date: January 1, 2016
