HJR 711 Summary

• Increases term limits for Florida state senators and state representatives from 8 consecutive years to 12 consecutive years for persons elected to their initial term in the 2016 general election or thereafter.

• Removes all term limits on U.S. Senators and U.S. Representatives from Florida, which previous term limits had been ruled unconstitutional.

• Amendment takes effect upon voter approval and applies only to individuals elected to their initial term of office starting in the 2016 general election.

• Persons convicted of felonies or adjudicated mentally incompetent remain disqualified from voting or holding office until restoration of civil rights or removal of disability.

• Requires voter approval through the next general election or an earlier special election specifically authorized by law.
