HB 907 Summary

• Beginning with the 2016-2017 school year, the Department of Education must incorporate 2 hours of youth suicide awareness and prevention training into existing continuing education or inservice training requirements for instructional personnel in elementary, middle, and high schools.

• The department, in consultation with the Statewide Office for Suicide Prevention and suicide prevention experts, must develop a list of approved training materials that include instruction on identifying mental health services and referring youth and families to those services.

• Training materials may include programs currently used by school districts that meet department criteria, and may include self-review programs that instructional personnel can complete independently.

• The required training must be incorporated into existing continuing education hours and cannot increase the total hours currently required by the department.

• No cause of action arises from implementation of this act unless loss or damage was caused by willful or wanton misconduct; the act creates no new duty of care or basis of liability.
