HB 1161 Summary

• Requires written prescriptions for medicinal drugs issued by licensed health care practitioners to include the medical condition for which the drug is prescribed.

• Requires electronically generated and transmitted prescriptions to include the medical condition for which the drug is prescribed, along with existing requirements for practitioner name, drug name/strength, quantity in numerical format, and directions for use.

• Mandates that complimentary drug packages dispensed by practitioners to their patients include the medical condition for the drug, either on manufacturer's packaging or on a container label.

• Requires pharmacists dispensing medicinal drugs under their own orders to include the medical condition on the drug label.

• Requires the medical condition for which a controlled substance is prescribed to appear on prescriptions and labels for controlled substances dispensed by both pharmacists and practitioners.

• Effective date: July 1, 2016.
