Palm Beach County School Board authorized to pay $994,034.30 to Altavious Carter as compensation for injuries sustained in a December 15, 2005 school bus accident.

Fourteen-year-old Carter suffered a broken neck at the C6 level with spinal cord damage when a school bus traveling at 48.5 mph struck the vehicle he was a passenger in at the intersection of Forest Hill Boulevard and Olympia Boulevard.

Carter received a jury verdict of $1,094,034.30 on February 25, 2010, with the school board having already paid $100,000 under statutory limits, leaving the unpaid balance of $994,034.30.

Combined payments from the school board and this act constitute sole compensation for all present and future claims arising from the accident.

Attorney fees, lobbying fees, costs, and related expenses may not exceed 25 percent of the total amount awarded under this act.
