District School Board of Sumter County is authorized to pay Donald Brown $1.4 million total for injuries sustained in a October 18, 2004 motorcycle accident caused by negligent operation of a school bus by employee Patsy C. Foxworth.

Initial payment of $900,000 to be made immediately, followed by annual payments of $50,000 each year from 2016 through 2025 ($500,000 total).

Donald Brown suffered a below-the-knee amputation of his right leg in the collision and later required an above-the-knee amputation due to complications, along with $421,693.60 in medical expenses.

Attorney fees, lobbying fees, and costs are limited to 15 percent of the first $1 million ($150,000) and 10 percent of the remaining $400,000 ($40,000), totaling a maximum of $190,000, with taxable costs from the underlying civil action payable separately.

The payment satisfies all present and future claims arising from the accident and the school board's vicarious liability for the employee's negligence.
