Beginning with the 2016-2017 school year, the Department of Education must incorporate 2 hours of training in youth suicide awareness and prevention into existing continuing education or inservice training requirements for instructional personnel in elementary, middle, and high schools.

The Department of Education shall develop a list of approved training materials in consultation with the Statewide Office for Suicide Prevention and suicide prevention experts.

Approved training materials must include instruction on identifying mental health services and referring youth and families to those services, and may include self-review programs or materials already used by school districts.

The required training must be included within existing continuing education hours and may not increase the total hours currently required by the department.

Providers of this training have no cause of action for losses or damages from implementation unless caused by willful or wanton misconduct, and no new duty of care is created.
