Beginning with students entering grade 9 in the 2017-2018 school year, students who completed minimum course credit requirements but failed the grade 10 ELA assessment or Algebra I EOC assessment are eligible for alternative pathways to a standard high school diploma.

Students may satisfy diploma requirements through one of four alternative pathways: attaining an industry-recognized credential and scoring at least 13 points on ACT WorkKeys assessments; mastering academic standards through a portfolio with quantifiable evidence; earning specified scores on Advanced Placement or P.E.R.T. exams for ELA; or earning a specified score on the SAT Mathematics Test for Algebra I.

Students must provide documentation verifying completion of an alternative pathway, which must be verified by the student's principal.

District school boards must incorporate alternative pathways to graduation in student progression plans.

The act takes effect July 1, 2017.
