CS/HB 723 Summary

• Prohibits the Boards of Medicine and Osteopathic Medicine, the Department of Health, health care facilities, and insurers from requiring ongoing maintenance of certification or recertification as conditions for licensure, reimbursement, or admitting privileges for physicians with initial board certification.

• Allows the state to continue requiring continuing medical education, but not ongoing board certification maintenance programs.

• Permits physicians with lapsed board certifications to identify themselves as "initially board-certified specialist" rather than as currently board-certified specialists.

• Applies to physicians and osteopathic physicians who have achieved initial board certification in any specialty or subspecialty recognized by approved certifying agencies.

• Takes effect July 1, 2017.
