CS/CS/HB 909 - Building Code Administrators and Inspectors

• Adds new eligibility pathway allowing candidates to qualify for building code inspector or plans examiner certification through completion of a 4-year internship certification program with proof of related vocational or college degree, or verifiable work experience that can reduce the requirement to minimum 1 year.

• Requires passage of International Code Council examination before beginning internship, completion of principles and practice examination before finishing internship, and completion of board-approved 40-hour code training course before finishing internship.

• Removes eligibility condition that newly hired persons performing inspector duties must meet specific requirements, allowing newly hired persons to perform duties for 120 days with provisional certificate application submitted if under direct supervision of certified building administrator.

• Authorizes counties, municipalities, school boards, community colleges, state universities, and state agencies to contract with persons or entities for provision of building code administrator, building official, and building code inspection services.

• Effective date July 1, 2017.
