Legislature finds that certified law enforcement officers proficient with firearms are valuable assets to school safety and encourages district school boards to place at least one school resource officer at each public school.

Part-time law enforcement officers (reserve officers) are now authorized to serve as school resource officers or school safety officers, in addition to full-time certified officers.

Fifty percent of the salary for part-time law enforcement officers hired on or after July 1, 2017, to serve as school resource or safety officers shall be funded by the employing district school board and law enforcement agency, with the remaining 50 percent provided through the General Appropriations Act.

School resource officers remain employed by law enforcement agencies and responsible to those agencies for employment matters, while school safety officers may be employed by either a law enforcement agency or the district school board.

Cross-reference in the developmental research schools statute is updated from section 1006.12(1) to 1006.12(2) to reflect the new subsection numbering.
