Students who completed minimum course credit requirements but failed the grade 10 ELA assessment or Algebra I EOC assessment become eligible for alternative graduation pathways beginning in the 2018-2019 school year.

Students may earn a standard diploma through either obtaining a state board-approved industry credential and scoring at least 13 combined points on ACT WorkKeys assessments, or demonstrating mastery of failed academic standards through a portfolio with quantifiable evidence.

Students must provide documentation verifying completion of an alternative pathway, which must be verified by the student's principal.

District school boards must include alternative pathway information in student progression plans required by statute.

The act takes effect July 1, 2018.
