Each school district must implement a drug and violence prevention program beginning in the 2018-2019 school year for grade 5 students in partnership with the county sheriff's office.

Program purposes include preventing illegal use of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs; reducing substance abuse; developing drug-free school environments; and instructing students on law enforcement interactions.

The program must include a 15-week curriculum selected or created by the county sheriff's office and be age-appropriate for students.

Funding is split equally, with 50 percent provided by the county sheriff's office and 50 percent provided by the district school board.

The State Board of Education may adopt rules to administer the program; the act takes effect July 1, 2018.
