FGCU was authorized by the Florida Legislature in May 1991 and opened to students on August 25, 1997, to serve the previously underserved Southwest Florida region

FGCU has grown to nearly 15,000 students and offers 53 undergraduate, 23 graduate, 10 certificate, and 3 doctoral programs across five colleges

The university has accumulated over two million student service learning hours in the Southwest Florida community since 1997 and achieved national prominence in academics, environmental sustainability, and student research initiatives
