Created by the Legislature on March 9, 2012, through Senate Bill 1994 and approved by the Governor on April 20, 2012, with requirements to meet criteria in academic programs, facilities, administration, student enrollment, and accreditation.

Received accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges in June 2017, successfully completing all required criteria.

Opened with 540 students in fall 2014 and grew to 1,445 students enrolled in fall 2017 with 225 full-time staff and faculty; offers bachelor's degrees in computer engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, computer science, data analytics, and science and technology management.

Features an Innovation, Science, and Technology building designed by Santiago Calatrava, identified as one of the 16 most breathtaking buildings in the world by prominent architects.

Recognized by the House of Representatives for meeting all established criteria and congratulated on its success, with a copy of the resolution to be presented to President Randy K. Avent, Ph.D.
