Initial opioid prescriptions for acute pain are limited to a 7-day supply, with refills or subsequent prescriptions limited to 30-day supplies, except for hospice care, cancer treatment, or chronic nonmalignant pain patients.

Prescribers must access the prescription drug monitoring program database before prescribing Schedule II, III, or IV controlled substances to patients 16 years or older, and at minimum every 90 days if treatment continues.

Health care practitioners authorized to prescribe controlled substances must complete a 2-hour continuing education course on controlled substance prescribing standards and associated risks, required for initial licensure and biennial renewal beginning January 1, 2019.

The course requirement can be offered in distance learning format and must be counted within existing continuing education hour requirements for each profession.
