Employees of dependent special districts or not-for-profit corporations operating public bus transit systems in Escambia County may elect to participate in the Florida Retirement System by August 31, 2018, with the election being irrevocable; employees hired on or after March 31, 2018 are required to participate.

Instructional personnel in K-12 schools and the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind who extend Deferred Retirement Option Program (DROP) participation beyond the initial 60-month period must have a termination date on the last day of the last calendar month of the school year, effective July 1, 2018.

Administrative personnel in K-12 schools with DROP termination dates on or after July 1, 2018 may extend DROP participation until the last day of the last calendar month of the school year if their original termination date falls before the end of the school year.

Employers must notify the Division of Retirement of the Department of Management Services regarding any changes in termination dates and DROP participation periods for affected instructional and administrative personnel.

The act takes effect July 1, 2018, except for provisions regarding Escambia County transit employees, which take effect upon the law becoming effective.
