Creates section 943.17161, F.S., requiring the Department of Law Enforcement to establish a continued employment training component on mental illness as defined in section 394.455.

Training component must include instruction on recognizing symptoms and characteristics of individuals with mental illness and appropriate responses to individuals exhibiting such symptoms.

Completion of the mental illness training may count toward the 40 hours of instruction required for continued employment or appointment as a law enforcement officer under section 943.135.

Takes effect October 1, 2018.
