All instructional materials for middle grades civics education courses must be reviewed and approved by the Commissioner of Education in consultation with organizations including the Florida Joint Center for Citizenship, Bill of Rights Institute, Hillsdale College, Gilder Lehrman Institute, iCivics, and Constitutional Sources Project, plus educators, administrators, postsecondary representatives, elected officials, business leaders, parents, and the public.

The Commissioner of Education must identify and correct any errors and inaccuracies in state-adopted civics materials pursuant to statute section 1006.35.

The Commissioner must review current civics education instructional materials and EOC assessment test specifications and provide recommendations for improvements by December 31, 2019.

The Department of Education must complete a review of statewide civics education course standards by December 31, 2020.

Hours devoted to the Florida Debate Initiative, YMCA Youth and Government program, American Legion Boys State, American Legion Girls State, or similar commissioner-approved programs count toward the service work requirement for the Florida Bright Futures Scholarship Program.
