HB 1213 - Native Language Assessments

• Upon request by a school district, the Commissioner of Education must provide statewide standardized assessments in any language for students with limited English proficiency.

• Students with limited English proficiency are entitled to choose whether to take statewide standardized assessments in their native language or in English.

• Upon request by a school district, the Department of Education must develop and provide end-of-course (EOC) assessments in any language for students with limited English proficiency, who may choose their language for EOC testing.

• The bill reenacts multiple sections of Florida law relating to the Florida Tax Credit Scholarship Program, school choice scholarships, school grading systems, and education accountability to incorporate these assessment language amendments.

• The act takes effect July 1, 2019.
