SB 1802: Elections

• Secretary of State becomes elected statewide office (4-year term starting 2023) rather than appointed by Governor, with eligibility requirements of being a registered elector, at least 30 years old, and 7-year state residency; term-limited to 8 consecutive years.

• Implements same-day voter registration allowing eligible persons to register and vote on election day or during early voting; repeals registration book closure requirements.

• Requires Secretary of State to provide formal signature matching training to election supervisors and canvassing board members before they may compare voter signatures on ballots.

• Establishes secure drop boxes for vote-by-mail ballots available 24 hours daily from 10 days before election through day before election, with security camera monitoring required.

• Makes General Election Day a paid holiday for state employees and grants all electors right to absent themselves from work without penalty to vote between poll opening and closing times.
