Amends Florida Statutes section 1003.42 to add water safety as a required component of comprehensive health education instruction in public schools.

Requires each school district to incorporate age-appropriate water safety instruction into the health education curriculum for students in grades kindergarten through 12.

Water safety instruction must include proper use of flotation devices, awareness of water conditions, rip current response, swim area supervision, safe water behaviors, pool barriers and fencing, formal swim lessons, avoiding alcohol and substance use during water recreation, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation for drowning victims.

The State Board of Education is encouraged to adopt standards and pursue assessment of the health education requirements.

Effective date is July 1, 2020.
