Public middle and high schools must conduct at least four fire drills and six emergency drills annually, with three fire drills involving building evacuation and four emergency drills addressing active threats

Active shooter and hostage situation drills must be developmentally appropriate, conducted with input from mental health professionals, and include law enforcement officers who are physically present and directly involved in execution

District school boards must establish procedures to notify parents before active shooter and hostage situation drills and provide parents the option to excuse students from evacuation drills

Students excused from evacuation drills by parents may elect to remain on school premises during the drill while remaining excused from participation
