SB 182 – Risk Protection Orders

• Expands the definition of "petitioner" eligible to file a risk protection order beyond law enforcement officers and agencies to include family members such as parents, stepparents, grandparents, children, legal guardians, spouses, and siblings of the respondent
• Allows family member petitioners to file in the county where they reside, in addition to the existing options of where the law enforcement office is located or where the respondent resides
• Requires the address of record on the petition to be the petitioner's residential address for non-law enforcement petitioners, or the law enforcement agency's address for officer/agency petitioners
• Neither the petitioner nor the respondent is required to be represented by an attorney
• Scheduled effective date of July 1, 2021
