CS/HB 79 Summary

• Requires individual health insurance policies to cover hearing aids for dependent children age 18 and younger with diagnosed hearing loss, when prescribed as medically necessary by a licensed physician or audiologist.

• Mandates minimum coverage of at least $3,500 per ear in any 24-month period, with ear mold coverage limited to six per 24-month period.

• Allows for additional coverage if a child experiences significant and unexpected hearing changes or medical conditions requiring prescription changes before the 24-month period expires, with a new 24-month benefit period beginning at full coverage.

• Applies the same coverage requirements to health maintenance organizations issuing individual contracts with major medical or comprehensive coverage for dependent children.

• Takes effect January 1, 2023, applying to all policies and contracts issued or renewed on or after that date.
