HB 181 - Jaime's Law: Ammunition Sales Background Checks

• Extends background check requirements to ammunition sales and transfers by licensed importers, manufacturers, and dealers, matching existing firearm regulations.

• Requires ammunition buyers to complete a form with personal information, submit to a background check fee (not to exceed $8 per transaction), and obtain an approval number before purchase.

• Exempts certain individuals from background checks including concealed weapons/firearms license holders, law enforcement officers, and correctional officers.

• Establishes exceptions for ammunition transfers at shooting ranges, during hunting/fishing activities, and between individuals when the transferor has no reason to believe illegal use is intended.

• Effective October 1, 2022; provides penalties of third-degree felonies for violations including false information provision, dealer non-compliance, and straw purchases of ammunition.
