CS/HB 229 Summary

• School boards must notify high school students and parents annually at the beginning of each school year about acceleration, academic, and career planning options including advanced placement, International Baccalaureate, dual enrollment, career academies, work-based learning opportunities, and Florida Virtual School courses, along with contact information for a certified school counselor.

• A personalized academic and career plan must be developed for each student in consultation with a certified school counselor as part of a required middle grades career and education planning course (grades 6-8).

• The personalized academic and career plan must inform students of high school graduation requirements, Florida Bright Futures Scholarship Program requirements, college admission requirements, opportunities to earn college credit, and information about work-based learning and career education pathways.

• The career and education planning course must be Internet-based, customizable to each student, include research-based assessments, emphasize entrepreneurship and employability skills, and incorporate information from the Department of Economic Opportunity's economic security report.

• The act takes effect July 1, 2022.
