HB 535 Summary

• Authorizes Brevard County Commission to amend the Barefoot Bay Recreation District Charter to increase Board of Trustees term lengths and stagger elections, subject to voter approval in November 2022 referendum.

• Establishes staggered election schedule: November 2023 election produces one 3-year and one 2-year term; November 2024 election produces two 3-year and one 2-year terms; subsequent elections are all 3-year terms.

• Limits trustees to no more than 3 successive 2-year terms or 2 successive 3-year terms, with maximum 6 consecutive years of service per trustee.

• Prohibits candidates from running if their election would cause them to serve more than 6 consecutive years, effective with the November 2023 election.

• Takes effect upon becoming law, and supersedes prior charter provisions from chapter 2017-202, Laws of Florida, if the referendum is approved.
