St. Johns County Sheriff's Office shall pay Julia Perez $5 million as an initial lump sum, followed by $2 million annually for 5 years, totaling $15 million in compensation for injuries sustained in an April 7, 2019 motorcycle accident caused by Deputy Brandon Hetzler's negligence.

Deputy Hetzler failed to yield while attempting a left turn in his patrol vehicle without activating emergency lights or siren, colliding with Ms. Perez's and Tom Eiland's motorcycles; Florida Highway Patrol cited him for violation of section 316.122, Florida Statutes.

Ms. Perez suffered severe injuries including multiple fractures, organ damage, cardiopulmonary arrest, and permanent kidney failure requiring dialysis three times weekly; past medical bills exceed $4 million with estimated future medical costs of $6 million.

State liens related to Ms. Perez's treatment and care are waived by legislative intent.

Attorney fees for this claim are limited to a maximum of 25 percent of the total award, and the compensation is intended to serve as sole compensation for all present and future claims arising from this incident.
