HB 983 Summary

• Creates section 365.1755 of Florida Statutes requiring wireless providers to immediately provide automatic location identification (mobile number, address/location, and emergency information) to account holders upon request during actual or perceived emergencies.

• Requires automatic location identification services be provided through a unique, well-advertised emergency number with no wait times and callers cannot be placed on hold.

• Mandates location information be provided both verbally and graphically to the account holder's wireless telephone, regardless of whether the service is activated or deactivated on the device.

• Allows family or household members of an account holder to request a temporary block (not exceeding 30 days) on the account holder's ability to access automatic location identification services; such requests must remain confidential and not be disclosed to the account holder.

• Permits wireless providers to charge a maximum fee of $5 per automatic location identification request; takes effect July 1, 2023.
