HB 1311 - Survivor Benefits

• Adds parent benefits for Florida Retirement System members killed in the line of duty who leave no surviving spouse or unmarried children under 18 (or 25 if enrolled as full-time student), effective July 1, 2023.

• Parents receive equal shares of monthly pension benefits equal to one-half of the member's salary at time of death, payable until both parents die or for 10 years, whichever occurs first.

• Applies to both regular members and Special Risk Class members killed in the line of duty.

• Defines "parent" as a member's biological or adoptive parent for purposes of survivor benefits.

• Effective date is July 1, 2023.
