Curtis' Law — CS for CS for SB 490 (Florida, 2023)

• Officially cited as "Curtis' Law," effective July 1, 2023

• Requires law enforcement agencies investigating the death of a minor to provide the minor's next of kin with contact information for the primary investigator and involved agencies, the case number, a list of the minor's personal effects and how to collect them, and investigation status updates at the agency's discretion

• Law enforcement may withhold any of this information if disclosure would jeopardize or interfere with an active investigation, and agencies are not required to provide actual investigative records for inspection

• Revises the definition of "legally authorized person" for purposes of funeral and disposition decisions to exclude any person arrested for committing domestic violence against the decedent or any act that resulted in or contributed to the decedent's death, consistent with s. 732.802

• Reorganizes the existing priority list for legally authorized persons (surviving spouse, adult children, parents, siblings, etc.) into a numbered subparagraph structure without changing the underlying order of priority
