Cited as "Jaime's Law," the bill extends Florida's existing background check requirements for firearm sales to also cover ammunition sales and transfers by licensed importers, manufacturers, and dealers, amending s. 790.065, F.S.

Background check exceptions apply to holders of valid concealed weapons or firearms licenses, certified law enforcement and correctional officers, and out-of-state purchases of rifle or shotgun ammunition by Florida residents.

Ammunition transfers are exempt from the background check requirement when they occur exclusively at shooting ranges or for hunting, trapping, or fishing purposes, provided the transferor has no reason to believe the transferee is prohibited from possessing ammunition or intends to use it in a crime.

Knowingly acquiring ammunition through purchase or transfer intended for a person prohibited by state or federal law from possessing ammunition is a third-degree felony, consistent with existing penalties for straw purchases of firearms.

Effective date is October 1, 2024.
