SB 1192 – "Kamala Harris Truth in Slavery Teaching Act"

• Officially titled the "Kamala Harris Truth in Slavery Teaching Act," introduced by Senator Ingoglia in the Florida Senate for the 2024 session
• Amends Florida's required instruction statute (s. 1003.42) governing the teaching of African American history in public schools
• Requires instruction to include a comprehensive account of the sociopolitical circumstances surrounding slavery, specifically including which political parties supported slavery by adopting pro-slavery tenets in their party platforms
• Adds to existing required curriculum that already covers African peoples before slavery, the passage to America, the enslavement experience, abolition, and contributions of Americans of the African diaspora
• Effective date of July 1, 2024
