Nearly 7,000 rare diseases and conditions affect fewer than 200,000 Americans each, with rare diseases as a group affecting approximately 30 million Americans, including 50 percent children.

The FDA has approved drugs and biologics for more than 1,000 rare disease indications, but millions of Americans with rare diseases lack approved treatments.

Individuals and families affected by rare diseases often experience diagnosis delays, difficulty finding medical experts, and lack of access to treatments or ancillary services.

Florida established the Rare Disease Advisory Council in 2021, and the resolution acknowledges the Orphan Drug Act championed by Florida Representative Gus Bilirakis for promoting biopharmaceutical development to treat and cure rare diseases.
