Fire alarm contractors with a license or NICET Level IV certification are exempt from needing a licensed engineer designation when working on projects with 50 or fewer devices powered by the building fire alarm system, or on complex fire alarm systems involving smoke control, deluge, pre-action sprinklers, clean agent releasing, or special hazard suppression systems

Fire detection and alarm system documents for new buildings or additions to existing buildings must be prepared by a fire protection engineer or NICET Level IV fire alarm systems designer when the building has 50 or more devices or includes complex suppression system interconnections such as smoke control, deluge, or clean agent releasing systems

Buildings with 49 or fewer initiating devices connected to a fire alarm system, or that lack complex fire alarm systems, are exempt from the requirement to have documents prepared by a fire protection engineer or NICET IV designer, except for high-rise buildings which remain subject to the requirement

The Division of State Fire Marshal within the Department of Financial Services is directed to adopt rules necessary for implementation and enforcement of the new fire alarm document requirements

The act has an effective date of July 1, 2025
