Licensed hospitals and ambulatory surgical centers must only employ central service technicians who have passed a nationally accredited exam and hold either a certified registered central service technician (CRCST) or certified sterile processing and distribution technician credential, or who were employed in the role before December 31, 2026.

New technicians who do not meet initial certification requirements must obtain the required credential within 18 months of their hire date to continue employment.

Central service technicians must complete at least 10 hours of continuing education annually related to their job functions as a condition of continued employment.

Licensed facilities must provide written verification of employment dates or contract periods upon a central service technician's written request.

Exemptions apply to health care practitioners acting within their scope of practice, students/interns under direct supervision during training, and persons holding other nationally accredited health services credentials.
